Computer Desks : How to shop for them?

While standard desks come in a variety of shapes, sizes, materials and finishes, they usually are 29" to 31" high, and are generally designed for the person of average height. Do you want to purchase a file drawer now, but be able to add a matching bookcase later? When selecting a standard workstation, keep in mind any features you would like to include in the future.

Executive desks, available in a range of styles and materials, are, like standard desks, 29" to 31" high, but usually are more elaborate in details and features and have wider desk tops. An executive workstation might include richer finishes and raised panel door or drawer fronts.

The L-shape desk optimizes floor and work space, because it conveniently fits into a corner of your room. Most L-shape desks are able to stand alone, and can be used to define the perimeters of a home office in a multi-use room by placing one side of the L against a wall. If this is a decorating option that appeals to you, check the manufacturer's product description to make sure that the back of the desk is finished.

A U-shape desk is made of three basic components; a credenza flanked by two desks on either side. U-shape and U Shaped computer desks are perfect for two people using the same work area, or for someone who needs to have space to work, in addition to the area allocated for the computer. This type of desk tends to take up a lot of floor space. However, U-shaped desks can still be used in small rooms depending on the dimensions of the unit chosen.

What Type of Computer Desk should I select?

Designed to fit into a corner, corner desks are an ideal solution for the home office that is part of another room or for one that is relegated to a small space. A corner workstation also has the added benefit of being ergonomic, because everything you need tends to be arranged within arm's reach.

Adding a hutch to a workstation allows you to build up rather than out, permitting you to add storage and functionality without taking up additional floor space. Many types of computer desks will offer a hutch for purchase as a separate unit, but purchasing one w/hutch will save you having to match it with your workstation at a later date. And buying all-in-one is more economical in the long run.

Workstations, like computer carts, combine a work area with different storage options or configurations. If moving the workstation around is not an option, select a computer armoire that will function as a workstation when needed, and can be enclosed, out of sight when not in use.

Depending on the number of pieces of office equipment you will be using on a daily basis, writing desks can also function as a place for your computer or laptop. A writing desk gives a room inspiration, whether you're creating a spreadsheet, paying the bills, or penning a novel.
